Erin posted a
blog post about the diversity of using Splunk. She wrote about some of the interesting things which you could do with the data and provided some use cases like my
Monitor a heating system with Splunk or the brand new
Monitor the sunshine intensity with Splunk Storm. Another interesting idea is Rick's
Splunk LED Monitor. At this point I am missing the "Extreme Feedback Device" of my colleague Michael. He is using our Splunk data to switch some lights if the error count rises. The lamps changs the colors to signal the errors by backend. If the error count is over the highest "allowed" level the lamps starts flashing. A few weeks after he installed the ExtremeFeedbackDevice (EFD?) we got bugged about the calls from his team members. They call us every time the color switches or flashing starts. We stopped the calls by fixing the errors and reducing long running requests and not by bringing EDF down.

That's another nice success story which shows how easy it is to make more out of the data.
